These are the records of the generations (descendants) of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and the sons born to them after the flood:
Seventy names close this chapter (v.32) — the same number as the seventy descendants of Jacob who later go down into Egypt (46:27). Cassuto reads this as deliberate: Israel, seventy souls, becomes a small-scale version of humanity as a whole, seventy nations. The shape of the whole world gets echoed in the shape of the one family Genesis is about to spend the rest of the book following.
